In case you haven’t noticed, sustainability is upon us with a vengeance. But what we make of it remains to be seen. We can safely say that this idea is not going away anytime soon and it will continue to redefine the time and space in which we live. It has certainly redefined the role(s) designers play within it. As a result, the marketplace now demands more meaningful products and experiences. Today, it is no longer enough to create beautiful things, but also to create the conditions and experiences that surround these beautiful things. This means we, as designers, are in a much better position to affect change on a much larger scale than ever before. Why not start this conversation with fresh young minds?

And it can begin in our own backyards. Let’s assume responsibility in joining this dialogue and seize the opportunity for change.

Are you up for the challenge?

GOAL: AIGA Chico State design students to define local and regional design opportunities to solve for, based on sustainable best practices. Develop actionable self-initiated design projects toward these opportunities. These case studies will be included in a bigger discussion about sustainability on regional and national level to showcase the power of design as a key driver for creating better change.

AIGA CSUC Design Contest: Chico State Graphic Design Tee

Hi Everyone,

This contest will run just like Threadless.com. Everyone is free to upload as many entries as they would like and the entry that gets the most votes will win and be produced to be sold to design students here on campus. Requirements include:

* The shirt must say “Chico State Graphic Design” somewhere on it.
* Maximum of three colors.
* No crossing garment seams. Keep all design at least 1″ from all seams (the shirts do not have a side seam.)
* Shirts can be mocked up in any color, however you may want to check out American Apparel to know exactly what color options will be offered at production time.

Caduff will give a short introduction to the film and then he will host a short Q/A session afterward.

Topic: "Designing for tablet based experiences". Erik will go over the fundamentals of designing visual user interfaces for multi-touch devices, such as the iPad. He'll be talking about behavior animations, usability issues, enabling technologies, and will present several of projects that Hot Studio has recently completed for Zinio, Palm, and Kno. Within the workshop students will go through a rapid ideation process in which they could brainstorm ideas for their own iPad app as well as group critiques and more.

Bio: Henrik Olsen is a Principal, and Creative Director at the San Francisco based interactive design firm Hot Studio, and has led the visual design discipline since 2002. Bringing his deep foundation of brand identity and online interaction design, Henrik has directed projects across Hot Studio’s full portfolio of clients. Recent client engagements have included SFMOMA, Dwell, eBay, California Academy of Sciences, Cisco, and Gap.

Inkjet Transfers

For those who still need to pick up the inkjet transfers (no laserprinter, inkjet only) please stop by Roberta's office when you get a sec. She is located in the basement of the library in MLIB-004. She is generally there between 8 and 4:30 but does take lunch and attends meetings, so maybe email her to confirm when you were thinking of coming down?

Once again, I'll have an iron at the meeting on Weds, but the design needs to be printed out and ready to iron by then.

Future AIGA Meetings

Hi Everyone,

We are going to be meeting next Wednesday to finish up the tees - I will bring an iron and we'll apply the transfers for people who haven't done it throughout the week. Elise is on board for snacks as well, so we can look forward to that!

Past next Wednesday, however, we will no longer be conducting meetings on a regular basis. When there is something to talk about, group projects to work on, workshops to attend, I'll call the group together for that specific purpose. Unless someone can think of a purpose to meet that I'm not considering? Drop me a line and we can chat about it :) Etienne and I will finish up booking our workshops within the next week or so. From there, I will require the help of the poster committee to publicize the workshops because we'd like to offer them to non-members (for a price). The fundraising committee will be working on the Woodstock's Pizza fundraisers and may contact you regarding the help they need to get that done.

Join the Facebook group & get a Twitter account - Rory will be very cross with you if you fail this assignment.
Bring in one or two ideas of groups you would like to see us work with this semester. Once we knock out this t-shirt project, we'll want to have a long term project lined up to be working on. It'll be nice for folks to have a portfolio piece that showcases your ability to collaborate while at the same time, display some social responsibility through design. Sounds official, huh?
One new thing I'd love for you guys to do: Could you please search out these people who aren't able to make the meetings and feel out how serious they are about it, see if they realize they would have to pay $50 to join, and to see when their big chunks of time are? I'd like to put this schedule thing to rest this Wednesday and either move the meeting time one more time or let them be eInvolved. Thanks for doing a little detective work for us :)

End of Semester Potlock BBQ!

The semester is juuust about over. It's time for our last event of Spring 2010.

We've decided to have a potluck style BBQ this coming tuesday 5/11 @ 7:30pm. We're going to have it at my house this time. -- Here's a map. -- It's the house at the very end of windsor way.

Go to the facebook page and post what you're going to bring. If everybody brings something to share we'll have enough for everybody.

Do you want chicken? Bring chicken. Want veggie burgers? Bring veggie burgers. Want a soy garlic infused chipotle dog? Bring a soy garlic infused chipotle dog. You get the idea. Bring stuff to be grilled and/or some non-grill muncies like....chips. I've got the drinks covered. There will be a selection.

Those of you who designed t-shirts are going to be rewarded somehow...maybe we'll get a spot in the cases for your designs. Thanks for working on those! We can still see if we actually want to buy tshirts, but since the semester is on it's way out - it is no longer at the top of our list. Thanks again.

CandleLight Vigil this Friday

If you've checked your Wildcat Mail recently, you may know that The Peace Institute will be holding a silent candlelight vigil this Friday the 16th on campus in an expression of commitment to "...discourse, nonviolence and tolerance." This is in response to what many consider to be a hate crime directed at one of our candidates for AS President.

Our group, which represents both AIGA and this campus community; holds these same commitments to nonviolence and tolerance. Political views aside, our crazy college lives aside, there is no room for that kind of behavior.

In case you haven't heard...

We're Going to San Francisco on April 1st!

I've got 9 people down to go so far. Let me know if you want to tag along. It should be fun! As of now we've got Dubberly Design Studio confirmed for that Thursday at 1:00pm. We will be hearing back from others within the next couple of days about other studios we may attend.

Anybody from the Bay? I know a couple people are. You guys can be our guides - there are a million good places for dinner in the city, help us narrow it down. That being said - plan to bring money to chip in on gas and get some food.

I'm going to ask people to keep their receipts. Our upcoming fundraiser should pay us back for this trip in my opinion, but what we do with our money is up for discussion.

We need money to do stuff.

This brings us to the Fundraiser. Our plan is to set up a table on campus soon and sell stuff. Suggestions are decals, customized t-shirts, customized red cups, baked goods, bookmarks and more. Our general idea was that we can pretty much sell whatever we think will sell ....within reason of course. The semester is going fast, but let's find something to spend money on LOL. I think we can handle that - but first we need to get some cash.

So here's a task for ALL of our members: Come up with something you think will sell and post it on the facebook page. Suggestion: Keep vinyl sticker stuff in mind, that can be a big money maker.

Who wants to come run the booth? Email me or post on the facebook page. We need a couple of volunteers. I'll be there for sure, but I think the more the merrier. We've got a "water-pong" idea going.....it should attract people to come show their skills with a ping-pong ball....

The T-shirt design contest continues.

Yep, we still need designs for our t-shirts. We've got 1 so far. Better come up with something or I think we'll have an un-opposed design!!! That'll be preeettyy embarrassing for us - you know, being a design group and all. ha ha! You can send me designs or bring them to our next meeting. Remember - two color designs, front only. We will discuss details more after designs are in and we go to screen.

March/April Stuff

Hey AIGA,

Thanks to everybody who showed for the meeting on tuesday. I think we seriously made progress.

Here are the major points of the meeting, followed by a brief description of what we're doing right now:

Tshirt ideas are due at our meeting after break on 3/23 - which will be at Woodstock's
Fundraising is our next big priority, and we have decided to get a booth for sales of coffee/hot choco. and decals. (important details below)
Members from last semester are finally getting access to their accounts. AIGA is not allowing us to add a few more people at the group rate, so people who want to join now will be $75 instead of $50. We are highly recommending doing this - now or at your own discretion. Either way - you can be a member of our on campus group, no problem.
We have got an idea for our first trip - which we are -at the moment- planning on going to San Francisco April 2nd. This is coming up! DIP may or may not be doing something similar on this day, and if they are - maybe we can join them. We also realize this is the weekend before Portfolio Review. You can do it! Plan ahead, get stuff done early, we've got faith in you.

So -- On the tshirts, design in (2) colors. Design in vector if you can, but we can probably convert it if you don't. Prepare for 15 bucks a piece on tshirts. It is possible that we could pay for the shirts with money that we raise, but we probably want to get the tshirts before then, so for now, prepare for 15 bucks on those.

On our fundraising, we are looking into getting a table and some times to set up out there. Lets talk about who can do what shifts at the booth. Also, more importantly, design some decals we can sell. If everybody could have an idea for that at woodstocks next time we meet, that'd be great. What's funny and/or relevant and original that will sell to Chico students?

First trip stuff - we have a few ideas already of where we would go in SF. We need people thinking of places to go and things to do. Current ideas are to go to pentagram and ideo, the classic places to tour. Any more ideas? Please do some research! Also, lets start talking about who's driving. We have a possible van...which would be sweet.

So our next meeting is at Woodstock's on Tuesday the 23rd. We will look at our desigs for shirts and vinyl decals, talk a bit more about our trip, alll while eating some serious Zza. (That's right - I said Zza.) Important - Everybody bring 5 bucks for pizza.

Most importantly right now - try and relax for a week. We've all had a crazy semester thus far, and its time for a little R and R. Don't forget to have a GREAT St. Patty's!

The Next Step on Memberships!! + other stuff

All of you who paid to be an AIGA member LAST semester.....the end is near.

If you paid last semester and have created a free account, you should have gotten a new email from AIGA today that gives further instructions on how to activate your student membership.

Make sure you have gotten the email, then follow the instructions, which are:

Login to your account and click the "My Account" link on the left side of the page.
Select "My Student Information" and fill in CSU Chico, your grad date and SAVE.
Next, email a jpeg of your class schedule or your Student ID to students@aiga.org

They need this info by five business days after you get the email, which you should have now.

If you already made your account, and you don't get an email in the next day or so, please try to create an account again, or let me know.

Everybody who wants to join officially this semester at the group rate: we haven't heard back about if we can add people on...which sucks. I will be emailing them tomorrow again, and I'll see if Barbara will contact them as well.

We are going to postpone the first design contest (which is to design our T-shirts) so we can talk about it more at the next meeting, which is
Tuesday, March 9th.

If you want to get a jump on it, the total design size is 8.5" by 8.5" in ONE COLOR -- Work in vector if you can, but it isnt required. More stuff like fonts and the AIGA logo will be discussed at the meeting.

The Latest: Details from the Potluck & More.

Hey AIGA,

The potluck was great! Even on a rainy night after a long day, we had a pretty good turn out. Let's do again really soon! Thanks again Jeff, for the use of your place. Also, thanks to Frank and Barbara for coming after teaching all day!

Those of you who couldn't make it - no worries! It was pretty laid back, the idea was not to discuss business too much - but we did talk about a few things.

Here is the latest:

First on the agenda was.......eating.
Secondly, Jeff let us know that he will be going in to get us put on the ballot for AS Revenue Sharing (giving us a chance to get some money!) so let's remember to vote on that when the time comes!
A few of us expressed interest in attending a meeting for the AS Sustainability Project, to see if we would like to make a proposal for next semester. Some ideas for proposals were discussed, but the general consensus was that our first step is attending the meeting on March 3rd in BMU 511 from 4-5. Send me an email if you want to go. There are no commitments at this point, we're just attending a meeting. They have $5000.00 for each new project, so it can't hurt to check it out.
We also discussed AIGA membership a bit. We are very close to activating the accounts from last semester. A few people who joined in fall still haven't gone to my.aiga.org to sign up for a free account to start the process. Please do that ASAP. If you want to join this semester, we are in the process of finding out if we can add more people at the group rate of $50. We'll know soon! Benefits include access to members only content on aiga.org - which includes job postings and all kinds of good stuff.
Our first design contest is going to be our T-shirt design! Start brainstorming on those. Official design specs and the due-date will be posted here in the next few days.
Finally, we elected our primary officers. There are more positions to be discussed and filled! The current officers are as follows:

President - Tim O'Meara
Co. Vice Presidents - Amanda Ashcenbrener and Josh Dempsey
Treasurer - Linsday Chedester
Secretary - Taylor Hess

There are a few people we have appointed for other things like our co-photographers and our PR manager, but we're going to hold off until next time to make those official.

We still need help with a variety of things. Please let somebody know if you have an idea for an office, or want to run for one we have already discussed.

Also - Who wants to go to Sacramento on March 19th for a free Lecture by graphic artist Hugh Dubberly? I think I'll be going (by the way, any "I" in these blogs are Tim, lol) but I can only take one person in my little truck with me. Anybody else want to go? If a couple people do, maybe we can use somebodies vehicle and split gas! Let me know.

Upcoming Projects/Events

(1) First Design Contest
We've already decided that monthly design contests are a good idea - so for our first one, we will be drawing two random words out of a hat for our theme. Come to the potluck for our first one! You could design anything from a logo or brand, to a poster or even mock up a spread or web layout! We should have room for all the work either in the cases in the hallway or on the bulletin boards.

Oh yes, there WILL be prizes.

(2) Environmental Proposal (and creating a team for it!)
Barbara brought up a great idea at the last meeting. Let's create a team, or teams, to make a proposal to AS for an environmental project that will benefit our campus and the world. They've got lots of money to give for these projects! We could design the materials for the proposal, and maybe some mock designs for future promotion. We've got the manditory workshop dates to look at at the next meeting.

Possible Future Event
PORTFOLIO REVIEW PEOPLE! There is an idea on the table for a Pre-Portfolio Workshop, where students who have passed the review can work one-on-one with you to talk about the review and the process! Those of you who haven't gone through the review, please let someone know soon so we can coordinate this event.

AIGA: 2010 - Spring Meeting Details

Hey Everybody,

If you don't know, it's Tim from AIGA, and this blog is our primary way of reaching members, advisers, and anyone else interested in our Student Group here on campus.

It's time to start meeting again!
(Or, for the first time, if you would like to join!)

This semester, AIGA is going to be a little bit different.

First of all, our President and fearless leader Katelyn Hampton will be stepping down. We thank her for all her help and a great job.

- So we will be needing to elect a new President. Since I'm reorganizing things, I'd like to run for the position. It will certainly be put to a vote at our first meeting.

Secondly, as things stand now, I'd like to get communication more open through this blog, email and facebook. In other words, we don't have to just talk about things at meetings. Let's discuss plans and ideas whenever we want to online, and then put our ideas into action at our official meetings.

Aside from our change in offices, what would you like to see this semester?

I'm going to suggest meetings every other week, (exact days and times to be decided by vote) + official and unofficial get-togethers at least once a month, and at least one good, solid, trip. All that means fund-raising, so we need to discuss that too!

It seems that the way to keep us rolling and having fun is just by simply hanging out! We can discuss that more at our first meeting, and we do have our event planners, Jeff and Dustin, to organize any events and/or trips we might plan, assuming they can remain in that office this semester.

So how about we have our FIRST MEETING on Tuesday, February 9th at 7pm?

How does that sound for everybody? Please respond to this email, or comment on the blog site if you have a conflict -- or if you want to start making suggestions for our group. (A good plan would be to bring those for our first meeting)

I will work on getting us a room for it.

AIGA's pre–registration form for Up 'Till Dawn will be turned in on Tuesday, November 3rd. Anyone who would like to sign up should email their name and phone number to Jeff Duncan over the weekend at JDuncan315@gmail.com.

Rain, Rain Go Away...

So in case anyone didn't hear, the hike has been cancelled due to the fact that hiking in the mud would be just, well, terrible.

Checks were to be cashed on the wednesday the 14th, so if 50 bucks magically dissapears from your account, that's why.

We're still in brainstorming mode on the decals and t-shirts.

We're doing a sort of workshop day at the next meeting 10/27 which will be up in tehama 226. That would be a great time to get back with your window groups, and maybe we can work on some decal designs too.

A reminder - the decals don't have to be about AIGA. Since the idea will be to sell them and raise money, just come up with something that will sell!

Lets get some decals designed so we have a good excuse to hang out and weed decals!

Possible things in the works for the future: Our event coordinators (Jeff and Dustin) are working on scheduling a studio tour down in Sacramento - they will be keeping us posted. Dustin is also talking about us doing a fund raiser over at Pizza Factory.

Up Till Dawn - AIGA Team

At Tuesday's meeting, Katrina Nelson suggested that AIGA participate in Up Til Dawn.

We are beginning to organize an AIGA team and we want to get as many people involved as possible!

Chico State has been the top fundraising campus in the country 2 years running and we're hoping this year will be number 3!
We accomplished our goal of $200,000 last year and now we're shooting for $1,000,000 and we can only do it with your help. It's a night full of fun games, activities, and prizes (I heard last year a car was given away) and we hope you'll join us.

For those of you who don't know what Up Till Dawn is, it is a fundraising campaign to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, one of the world's premier pediatric cancer research centers whose mission is to find cures for children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. St. Jude's is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatment not covered by insurance. No child is ever denied treatment because of the family's inability to pay. This fundraiser is to help keep it that way.

Where: Acker Gym
Date: November 9
Time: 4 pm – 12 midnight
Bring: 50 addresses of friends and family

First Meeting Details + Pizza Factory 9/15

The first meeting went great! For those of you who couldn't make it - it took place at the Lounge in the BMU last thursday. Thanks for a great turn out.

We broke the ice, discussed future meetings and talked about possible officers. A final list of those officers should appear in the next posting. Frank suggested that we list officers and their contacts on the main page of the blog - that will follow as well.

We talked about possible trips for this semester; including San Francisco design firms/events and some ideas for local outings. Plans for future meetings and get togethers were also discussed -any ideas can be brought up at the next meeting or emailed around.

It was eventually decided that our next meeting (more like a social mixer) will be held at Pizza Factory on Nord, across from safeway - on Tuesday, September 15th at 8:00pm. Please bring $5.00 to cover pizza and a check for $50.00 made out to AIGA for membership.

Ryan gave us an idea for a "design-off" based on two words chosen randomely. This week's words are: Hair Alliance. LOL! Bring your design to Pizza Factory on Tuesday.
